Sports & Recreation

Castleisland has a great tradition of sport throughout the years and offers a fantastic choice of sports and recreation. An Riocht Athletics Club is the home of fitness located at Crageens Castleisland and boasts an international standard four hundred Meter Tartan Athletics Track with in field Soccer Pitch and a new State of the Art Gym with Spa Facilities.

GAA clubs in the include Castleisland Desmonds GAA Club & Castleisland Desmonds Ladies GAA Club. St Marys Basketball Club Castleisland Founded in the late 1950’s St. Mary’s basketball club is one of the largest in the country. The club competes in competitions at all grades and has won juvenile and senior titles locally and at national and international level as well as having the honour of being named club of the year by Basketball Ireland, the national governing body in 2009. St. Mary’s is best known for its annual five-day blitz which has been running since 1970 and caters for over 1700 players of all ages.

Castleisland Pitch & Putt has been in existence since 1967. It has a modern 18-hole course and clubhouse, which houses the Castleisland Snooker Club. There are two adjoining tennis courts that complement the grounds. The club’s members hosted the Munster Inter County Championships in 2017 that drew crowds. They organise the annual Danny Broderick Memorial Cup. Only 5 minutes’ walk from the town centre and just off the R577 to Scartaglin, the Pitch & Putt club is in an idyllic part of Castleisland.

Castleisland Rugby Club was established in 1926. There are approx. 175 active participants in the club which caters for minis up to seniors, welcoming young boys, and girls from a formative age. The grounds consist of two playing pitches and an all-weather pitch. Games can also be played under lights. There are dressing rooms and a function room.

Castleisland A.F.C. (soccer) currently plays in the Premier A division of the Kerry District League. Founded in 1973, it always welcomes new club members.
Sliabh Luachra boxing club Castleisland boasts Irish and Munster titles, this great local club has had remarkable success in recent years.

Castleisland Kingdom Badminton Club enjoys their season from April to September. The club is a member of the Kerry Badminton Association which has over eighteen individual competitions for both juveniles and seniors/ adults. During the season also, ladies, men and mixed leagues take place. Munster and All Irelands also take place.
